Compliments
I'm trying to find my style.
I've never considered myself a fashionable dresser.
But I wanted to change that at least for a day.
So I pulled a sweater over my collared shirt,
threw on my cream wool trench coat,
stepped into my boots,
and put on a pair of earmuffs to keep me warm.
As I stood waiting to cross the street into the subway,
I sensed the inspection of an elderly woman.
I glanced at her and she said, "I like your boots."
"Thanks!", I said. "They're my first ever pair of boots."
The day passed and I found myself on the other side of the street,
having exited the subway, eager to arrive home.
A man a few years my younger spoke to me.
Lifting my earmuffs and taking an Airpod out,
I requested that the man kindly repeat himself.
"Woah, those are earmuffs!"
"I wanted to say I like your headphones. Where'd you get them?"
"Thank you! Frankly, I don't know -- I took them from a relative."
And we parted ways.
I thought to myself, complimented from head to toe...
Maybe I had found my style today.
